The Andrews A-22 Combo and Head
(1X12 and 2X12 cabinets now available)
Looking for a superb amp to give your guitars a new voice? Then look no
further. The A-22 has a sound that's classic yet unique for players who are seeking
something a little different without getting too far away from the tones
that started all the excitement. In the stock configuration, you can achieve rich
thick medium-overdrive tones without the need of a stomp box. With the change
of one preamp tube (included), a wider range of clean to crunch tones are
available while an overdrive or boost box can send you into high gain
territory.

Para-Dyne
page for new smaller 2 X 12 extension cabinet.

This is our new shorter wider 1 X 12 "Club Combo" It
features an open back cabinet and top mounted controls.

DESIGN CONCEPT:
The A-22 produces
about
22 watts RMS before clipping from a pair of EL84 output tubes operating in class A/B
mode with adjustable fixed-bias. Three 12AX7s or two 12AX7's and one
12AU7 are used in the preamp circuit and phase
inverter circuits. We can also build this amp with other output
wattages ranging from 19 watts to 50 watts.

The design achieves a medium-low power output with aggressive, tight, punchy,
thick and warm
tone with plenty of midrange and lots of texture.
The amp has a decidedly British vintage hard rock sound with gain level
that's a bit
higher than a late 60's or early 70's Marshall Super Lead but with a thicker, warmer overdrive
tone.
The amp and cabinet are designed to emulate the sound of a big 4X12 cabinet
with out all the bulk and extreme volume. This amp is extra sensitive to touch and to your guitar volume control settings.
It has a huge sound, but it does so at reasonable volume levels that are
usable in most real-world performance or recording situations! On the
"studio combo" model (pictured above left), the large cabinet contributes to a really big sound with plenty
of bottom end. For a 22 watt amp, it's very loud, just not quite as
loud as some 50 watt amps.
In fact, when pushed into heavy overdrive, the output will beover 40 watts. This means all you have to do is crank the volume control on
your guitar and the amp will instantly get the overdrive tone you've been
wanting while at the same time, giving you the big volume increase you need
for your solos. With our very usable master volume control, you'll have great overdrive
tones in a wide range of volume situations. Overall, you'll find
the amp to be much louder, fatter, punchier and richer sounding than those 18 and 20 watt
Marshall clones so many companies are building. You'll also find
several features that most other amps don't have such as bias test points,
heavy duty impedance selector, very high build quality and more. See below for details.

FEATURES:
ALL TUBE CIRCUITRY FOR PURE WARM TUBE SOUND Your guitar
signal does not pass through any transistors or integrated circuits (ICs).
ALL HAND WIRED CONSTRUCTION Also sometimes called
point to point wiring, the amp is hand-built in Atlanta, GA and
constructed with great
attention to detail. The A-22 utilizes a very high quality turret board made
of a super tough G10 composite. This glass-epoxy laminate is specified
for its extremely high strength and high dimensional stability over
temperature. This material will never warp,
melt, or absorb moisture. There are no copper traces to peel away from
the board, crack or melt like printed circuit boards (PCBs) sometimes do.
All wiring and soldering is done by hand and quality-checked to ensure
many years of trouble free operation.
USER CUSTOMIZABLE FOR GREATER VERSATILITY - You can choose either a 12AX7
or 12AU7 for the first preamp stage depending on the amount of gain you
prefer. In addition, the combo cabinet features a 3-piece back that
an be configured as closed-back or semi-open for even more tonal
versatility.
CUSTOM-WOUND, AMERICAN-MADE TRANSFORMERS Our
transformers are wound to our specifications specifically for the
requirements of this amp design. The result is a very reliable amp that
sounds like no other. The transformers are wound on paper bobbins like in the good
old days and are rated to withstand extreme heat for high reliability.
The output transformer is wound with several interleaves for optimum
balance. In addition, special (more expensive) types of steel cores are utilized
in both transformers for
maximum efficiency, lighter weight and superior tone. The output impedance is switchable
to 4, 8 or 16 ohms.
STRAIGHTFORWARD, DEPENDABLE, SINGLE-CHANNEL DESIGN
FRONT PANEL - High/Low Inputs (9db difference),
Volume, Treble (pull for midrange boost), Bass, Presence and a well balanced and usable post phase
inverter Master Volume Control. REAR PANEL - Two standard size fuses, 4/8/16 ohm impedance
switch, 2 speaker jacks, and bias test points.
CUSTOM DESIGNED CABINET Our cabinets feature a unique
design for maximum durability and superior tone. We use only very-high-grade
void-free Baltic Birch ply for the "tolexed" cabinets and select hardwoods
for the super-premium cabinets. The cabinet components are
precision cut using high-tech equipment and are hand assembled with care
in the USA. Dovetail joints are used at the corners for maximum strength.
Unlike most other combo amps, the speaker compartment
is isolated from the tubes. This greatly reduces the chances of the
tubes being vibrated by the sound pressure waves coming off the back of
the speaker therefore reducing tube microphonics, rattling and premature
failure. CUSTOM DESIGNED CHASSIS Our chassis is designed
specifically for this amp model so that every part can be mounted in the
optimal location for lowest noise and highest circuit stability.
OTHER HIGH QUALITY PARTS - We use "Sprague Atom" and
"F&T" electrolytic capacitors, Switchcraft jacks and Carling switches.
Our output tube sockets are high-quality ceramic types that are designed
to take the extreme heat of fully driven output tubes. A mixture of
Carbon Composition, Metal Film and Metal Oxide resistors are used in the
appropriate places for best tone, lowest noise and highest reliability.
EXTERNAL BIAS TEST POINTS The A-22 is equipped with
external bias test points and an externally accessible adjustment
control. This is because the bias should be adjusted any time the output tubes are
replaced in any amp that is not-cathode biased. This makes output tube replacement fast and economical. In
fact, with a low cost multi-meter and a small screwdriver, you can adjust bias yourself. This can
be a real advantage in case of a tube failure during a performance or
recording session. In addition, the output circuit is designed
so that in case of tube failure, it is extremely unlikely that any
other components will be damaged except the fuse.
EASY TO USE TONE CONTROLS - This is not an amp that
requires a lot of tweaking of the tone controls to get a good sound.
You'll get "the tone" at nearly any setting without a lot of fiddling
with the dials. We didn't design unusable extremes into the
controls. Why have controls that go way beyond what sounds good?
